When I first arrived at CIG, the training sessions were unstructured with two week-long sessions that consisted primarily of becoming familiar with their software through experience. We had no written documentation, lecture slides, or visual aids to guide the training. We did not have a single point of contact for training as this was shared between 3 to 4 lead testers.
Eventually, I was tapped to recreate and optimize the training. The goal of this Basic Training course was to provide the foundational knowledge to ensure that new testers and contractors were confident with the various elements of bug writing. The company did not wish to grant full access to programs such as Jira and AirTable unless this foundational course had been completed. It would include a practical “in-person” component for in-house testers and a MS Teams component for contractors due to distance. The project required a quick turnaround as the Basic Training was only months away, so I knew that Articulate Storyline would be a good fit for the timeline as well as the web-output requirement.
Assessment:
This particular company has numerous QA Testers with Jiras returned for additional information which slowed down fix integrations for software updates. The company agreed with my assessment that practices for newly hired testers were insufficient.
Deliverables:
This project focused on creating a new foundational set of training documents consisting of video, images, scripts, and audio for each Jira section along with peer review sessions that reinforced learning. This new training would be broken up into two modules - Basic Training & Jira Essentials.
I began by logging all the technical issues with the training courses that I wanted to improve upon or create efficiencies for, and I consulted with our Subject Matter Experts to identify preferred teaching methods and topics to be covered. I then worked alongside my management team to identify ways in which we could leverage Articulate Storyline’s built-in functionality to optimize the training further along with adding some flair to my work.
A major hurdle encountered was the lack of a Learning Management Systems (LMS) for using this new curriculum for these larger courses. Eventually the modules were exported into their own individual set of files for disbursement to New Hires and contractors as they came on board.
Goals:
To quickly and efficiently train new Quality Assurance Testers in identifying the necessary elements of Jira, as configured by the company and best practices for writing these Jiras.
The results were that we achieved our goal: we mitigated erratic training issues by overhauling the entire training program with new foundational courses. Now, the company works to with this training program and has begun to identify areas for optimization – the courses continue to get a refreshed look and feel, but behind the scenes they are becoming more efficient. I’m proud of my work, and I’m glad to have been part of it!
